The world premiere of the new Porsche 911 Dakar

Originally, Porsche was a sports car manufacturer, but in 2002 the SUV “Cayenne” debuted, and seven years later in 2009 the sedan “Panamera” appeared, and now there are various body types. We sell cars.

Even so, the 911 is still a sports coupe that represents Porsche, and the current model is the 992, the eighth-generation model that appeared in 2018.

The new 911 Dakar, which was unveiled for the first time in the world at the Los Angeles Auto Show this time, is based on the eighth generation 911 mentioned above, and has improved running performance such as raising the vehicle height. It is the company’s first two-door with outstanding off-road performance. It’s a sports model.

The “Dakar” in the model name is a rally car based on the Porsche 911, which was the first Porsche to be equipped with an all-wheel drive system in 1984.

Its exterior is considerably tougher than the usual 911. Resin parts and skid plates are also attached to the lower parts of the front, rear, left and right bumpers and fenders to enhance the powerful impression of an SUV, as well as a newly developed CFRP fixed lightweight rear spoiler and a full-fledged sports grade. The front luggage compartment lid with the striking air outlets from the 911 GT3 indicates that it is a fast off-road sports car.

Underfoot, five-spoke wheels with a classical design are combined with specially developed Pirelli all-terrain tires (front: 245/45 ZR 19 rear: 295/40 ZR 20).

Optionally, you can also choose a roof tent or a dedicated roof rack with lights. The rack has a 42kg load capacity and can easily accommodate rally gear such as fuel, water bottles, folding shovels and traction boards.

In the interior, full bucket seats are standard equipment, and rear seats are omitted, giving a spartan impression. An optional rally sports package with a roll cage, 6-point seat belts and fire extinguisher is also available.

The powertrain uses a 3-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder twin-turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 480 horsepower and a maximum torque of 570 Nm. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds, and its all-terrain tires limit its top speed to 240km/h.

The new 911 Dakar has 50mm more ground clearance than the regular 911, and the standard lift-up system allows the front and rear ends to be lifted an additional 30mm. Its ground clearance and angles are comparable to conventional SUVs.

At the highest height, it can only run up to 170km/h, and at higher speeds, it automatically lowers to normal height.

In addition, by adopting lightweight glass and a lightweight battery, the vehicle weight is kept to only 1605 kg, which is about +10 kg compared to the 911 Carrera 4 GTS.

The new 911 Dakar also has a rally design package with styling that follows the rally car that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar. In addition to the two-tone exterior color of rally car-like white and gentian blue metallic at the time, you can select the number from 0 to 999 on the side. The interior is also customized to match the exterior, with shark blue seat belts and accents added.

Furthermore, it is possible to order the Porsche Design Chronograph 1-911 Dakar or the Chronograph 1-911 Dakar Rally Design Edition exclusively for customers who have purchased the new 911 Dakar.

The price of the new 911 Dakar has not been announced in the release, but some media have stated that it will exceed $ 220,000 (about 30.61 million yen), and it seems that production will be limited to 2,500 units.
